Sinus infections occur when the sinuses become swollen or inflamed and, as a result, do not drain correctly.
A sinus infection, also known as sinusitis, is the inflammation or swelling of the sinuses. The sinuses are air-filled spaces located in your nose, cheeks, and forehead, and their primary function is to produce mucus to maintain moisture inside your nose. This mucus plays a crucial role in protecting the body by trapping dust, allergens, and various pollutants, preventing them from entering the respiratory system.
Symptoms of a Sinus Infections
Strep throat is a bacterial infection that primarily affects the throat and tonsils, and its symptoms often appear rapidly, typically within 2 to 5 days after exposure to the bacteria. The most common and hallmark symptom is a sore throat that comes on very quickly, often accompanied by significant pain when swallowing. Examination of the throat may reveal red and swollen tonsils, sometimes with distinctive white patches or streaks of pus, as well as tiny, red spots on the roof of the mouth, known as petechiae.
In addition to throat discomfort, individuals with strep throat commonly experience a fever, which may begin suddenly and can be highest on the second day. Other associated symptoms include swollen and tender lymph nodes in the front of the neck, and a general feeling of being unwell. Less common but possible symptoms, especially in children, can include a headache, nausea or vomiting, stomach pain, and sometimes a rash (known as scarlet fever).
Sinus Infections Treatment
Treatment for strep throat is crucial, primarily involving antibiotics to cure the bacterial infection, relieve symptoms, and, importantly, prevent serious complications such as rheumatic fever or kidney inflammation. Once strep throat is confirmed through a rapid strep test or throat culture, a medical provider will typically prescribe an oral antibiotic, such as penicillin or amoxicillin, for a course of 10 days.
In addition to antibiotics, various home care measures and over-the-counter remedies can help alleviate the discomfort associated with strep throat while the antibiotics take effect. These include taking fever reducers and pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen, gargling with warm salt water several times a day to soothe throat pain, and consuming soothing foods like broths, soups.
