Acute Bronchitis
Acute bronchitis is the inflammation of the small tubes that carry air in and out of the lungs, which are called bronchi.
The condition, acute bronchitis, can occur in short bouts that last a few weeks and generally result from a viral infection.
Acute bronchitis, which can also be called a chest cold, often develops when you have a cold, the flu, or another respiratory infection—most commonly a virus. The irritation in your lungs can cause them to fill with mucus, which causes you to cough.
Symptoms of an Acute Bronchitis
The most noticeable symptom of acute bronchitis is a productive (mucus-producing) cough that can last for days or even weeks. Other associated symptoms that you might experience include fatigue, a low-grade fever and chills, chest pain, and shortness of breath.
Beyond the prominent cough, several other symptoms are commonly associated with acute bronchitis. These can include feelings of fatigue or general tiredness, which is your body’s response to fighting off the infection.
Acute Bronchitis Treatment
Acute bronchitis is typically not treated with medication because it often goes away on its own. However, a healthcare provider may recommend over-the-counter medication or pain relievers to help manage your symptoms.
While specific medications to cure the viral infection are generally not prescribed, a healthcare provider may recommend various over-the-counter medications or pain relievers to help manage and alleviate your symptoms.
