Upper Respiratory Infections

Upper Respiratory Infections

Upper respiratory tract infections are irritation and swelling that affect the upper part of your respiratory system, including your sinuses and throat.

Both viruses and bacteria can be the cause of an upper respiratory infection. These pathogens typically enter your system through airborne transmission, such as from someone coughing or sneezing nearby, or through direct contact, like touching infected surfaces and then touching your face.

In most cases, professional medical help isn’t strictly needed for an upper respiratory infection because if symptoms become bothersome, over-the-counter decongestants and other products can often provide the necessary relief and manage the discomfort effectively until the infection resolves on its own.

Symptoms of a Upper Respiratory Infections

An upper respiratory infection, often abbreviated as a URI, can manifest with a variety of bothersome symptoms that affect the nose, throat, and airways. These commonly include coughing, which can range from mild to persistent, and sometimes wheezing, indicating some narrowing of the airways. You will also typically experience nasal congestion, making it difficult to breathe through the nose, and frequent sneezing as your body tries to expel irritants.

Accompanying these nasal and airway symptoms, individuals with a URI may also suffer from sinus pain, felt as pressure or tenderness in the face, as well as a sore throat, which can be scratchy or painful, especially when swallowing. While these symptoms can make daily activities uncomfortable, they are generally indicative of your body’s immune response to the infection.

Upper Respiratory Infections Treatment

At HomeTown Urgent Care, our medical providers leverage their expertise, along with our on-site lab testing capabilities as needed, to accurately diagnose your upper respiratory infection. They will thoroughly examine you to determine whether your infection was caused by a virus, such as the common cold, or by bacteria. This distinction is critical because it dictates the most effective course of treatment.

For bacterial infections, antibiotics can be a useful and targeted solution for fighting off the infection. Conversely, if the URI is determined to be a viral infection, the usual course of action is to focus on treating your symptoms and providing supportive care while your body works to fight off the infection naturally.
