Sexually Transmitted Infections

Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)

HomeTown Urgent Care offers STD (STI) testing in a comfortable, private setting.

HomeTown Urgent Care offers comprehensive STD testing through its STI Test Panel, which is designed to screen for all common sexually transmitted diseases. This panel includes testing for a wide range of infections such as Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, HIV, HSV-1 (Herpes Simplex Virus type 1), HSV-2 (Herpes Simplex Virus type 2), Syphilis, and Trichomoniasis. Additionally, tests for Bacterial Vaginosis may be added at the discretion of the provider, depending on the patient’s symptoms and risk factors.

Symptoms of a Sexually Transmitted Infections

It is crucial to understand that many Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) or Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) are asymptomatic, meaning they do not show any noticeable signs or symptoms, especially in their early stages. This makes regular testing incredibly important for sexually active individuals. However, when symptoms do appear, they can vary widely depending on the specific infection. Common general indicators might include unusual discharge from the vagina, penis, or anus; itching or irritation in the genital or anal area; or the presence of sores, bumps, or warts around the genitals, anus, or mouth.

Other potential symptoms can include pain or burning during urination, discomfort or pain during sexual intercourse, or abnormal vaginal bleeding between periods. Some STIs can also cause more systemic symptoms, such as rashes on the body (including the hands and feet), fever, fatigue, or swollen lymph nodes, indicating that the infection is affecting the broader body. Because symptoms can be subtle, overlap with other conditions, or not appear at all, relying solely on visible signs is not a reliable way to determine STI status.

Sexually Transmitted Infections Treatment

The treatment for STDs/STIs varies significantly depending on whether the infection is caused by bacteria, viruses, or parasites. Bacterial STIs, such as Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Syphilis, Trichomoniasis, and Bacterial Vaginosis, are typically curable with a course of antibiotics. It is essential for patients to complete the entire prescribed course of medication, even if symptoms improve, to ensure the infection is fully eradicated and to prevent antibiotic resistance. For these infections, treating sexual partners is also vital to prevent re-infection and further spread.

Viral STIs, including Herpes (HSV), HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C, are generally not curable, but their symptoms can be effectively managed with antiviral medications. These medications can help suppress outbreaks (as in Herpes), reduce the viral load (as in HIV), or prevent further liver damage (as in Hepatitis). While not a cure, consistent treatment can significantly improve quality of life, reduce the risk of transmission to others, and prevent long-term health complications.
