Pneumonia

HomeTown Urgent Care is here to support you when a persistent cough and high fever, which are hallmark symptoms of pneumonia, reach a point where expert medical care is essential for recovery.

Pneumonia is a respiratory illness caused by an infection that occurs in one or both lungs. This infection leads to inflammation and the accumulation of fluids within the tiny air sacs of the lungs, known as alveoli. Consequently, this buildup disrupts the normal and essential exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide, making it difficult for the affected individual to breathe properly.

Symptoms of a Pneumonia

Pneumonia can manifest with a variety of symptoms, which can range from mild to severe depending on the type of germ causing the infection, your age, and your overall health. Common symptoms often include a persistent cough, which may produce thick, yellowish-greenish, or even blood-tinged mucus or pus. A high fever (sometimes reaching dangerous levels like 105°F or 40.5°C), accompanied by sweating and shaking chills, is also a hallmark of the illness.

Other significant symptoms include shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, even at rest, as well as rapid breathing and an increased pulse rate. You might experience chest pain, which often worsens when you cough or take a deep breath. Feelings of extreme fatigue or weakness, headache, and muscle aches are also common.

Pneumonia Treatment

Treatment for pneumonia aims to cure the infection and prevent complications, with the approach varying based on the type and severity of the pneumonia, the patient’s age, and overall health. For bacterial pneumonia, antibiotics are the primary treatment. It’s crucial to take the full course of antibiotics as prescribed, even if you start feeling better, to ensure the infection is completely eradicated and to prevent antibiotic resistance.

Many people with milder pneumonia can be treated at home. This involves essential supportive measures such as getting plenty of rest to allow your body to recover, and drinking plenty of fluids (especially water) to help loosen mucus in your lungs and prevent dehydration. Over-the-counter fever reducers and pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help manage fever and discomfort.
