Migraines and Headaches

Migraines and Headaches

A headache or migraine can cause mild to serious discomfort and can have a major impact on your daily life when symptoms are severe.

Compared to most headaches, migraines are moderate to severe in intensity. The pain is usually isolated to one side of the head and may throb. Migraines can make working or doing everyday activities difficult due to the severity of the pain and the other symptoms that often accompany a migraine. These symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light and/or sound, seeing spots or flashing lights, temporary blurring or loss of vision, and pain in the temples and/or behind one eye or ear.

Symptoms of a Migraines and Headaches

Some migraines are preceded by a prodrome phase, which typically begins one to two days before the actual migraine attack. During this preliminary phase, an individual may experience a range of subtle signs, including constipation, feelings of depression, frequent yawning, increased irritability, stiffness in the neck, and unusual food cravings. These seemingly unrelated symptoms can serve as early warnings that a migraine is impending, allowing some individuals to anticipate an attack.

Following the acute migraine attack, which itself can last anywhere from four to 72 hours, a postdrome phase can occur. During this period, which may last for about 24 hours, you might feel either completely drained and fatigued or, paradoxically, unusually elated. Other common sensations in the postdrome phase include feeling confused, moody, dizzy, or weak, along with continued sensitivity to light and sound. These lingering effects can significantly impact a person’s functionality even after the most severe pain has subsided.

Migraines and Headaches Treatment

Different types of headaches and migraines often respond to different treatments, making a precise diagnosis crucial. At HomeTown Urgent Care, a visit for head pain will involve a full neurological exam coupled with a thorough review of your medical history. This comprehensive approach helps our providers accurately identify the specific type of headache you are experiencing, ensuring you receive the most appropriate and effective treatment.

For more severe types of headaches, such as cluster headaches, over-the-counter pain relievers normally don’t respond well due to their rapid onset. Cluster headaches can be acutely treated with oxygen and fast-acting, injected or inhaled pain relievers. To help prevent cluster headaches from re-occurring, preventative medications like calcium channel blockers, corticosteroids, lithium carbonate, melatonin, and nerve blocking treatments may be used.
