Hepatitis

Hepatitis

Viral hepatitis can be both acute (severe and sudden) and chronic (long-developing).

Hepatitis refers to the swelling of the liver. In the United States, the three most common types are hepatitis A, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C. When your liver becomes infected with one of these hepatitis viruses, it can cause inflammation, which in turn damages and affects how your liver functions.

Symptoms of a Hepatitis

Hepatitis A, B, and C generally exhibit a similar range of symptoms, though their absence does not necessarily mean one is unaffected, as the virus can still be spread without symptoms. Common indicators include a fever, persistent fatigue, and digestive issues such as nausea and vomiting. Additionally, individuals may experience abdominal pain, particularly in the area of the liver.

Other symptoms that can manifest include dark urine, which is a sign of liver dysfunction, and general joint pain. A more distinctive symptom is jaundice, characterized by yellowing of the skin and eyes. It is crucial to remember that even if these symptoms are not present, the virus can still be actively spread, highlighting the importance of testing if exposure is suspected.

Hepatitis Treatment

HomeTown Urgent Care does offer hepatitis testing. This is typically provided if you present with a bloodborne pathogen exposure, such as a needlestick injury or a human bite, and/or if there is a risk of infection. A medical provider will thoroughly discuss your testing options with you to determine the most appropriate course of action based on your specific situation and exposure.

There are three primary types of hepatitis commonly discussed: Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C. Each type is caused by a different virus and can be transmitted through various means, impacting the liver in distinct ways, though they all lead to inflammation of the organ. Understanding the specific type is crucial for proper management and prevention.
