Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye)

Also known as pink eye, conjunctivitis is a common and highly contagious illness.

The characteristic sign of pink eye is a pink or reddish color on the whites of the eyes. While pink eye can usually be treated at home, medical help is often necessary. Pink eye is an inflammation or infection of the transparent membrane that lines your eyelid and covers the white parts of your eyes. Pink eye may be caused by viruses, bacteria, or allergens.

Symptoms of a Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye)

Several symptoms indicate the presence of pink eye, also known as conjunctivitis. Paying close attention to these signs can help you decide when to consult a doctor and what kind of treatment might be necessary. The most common symptom is redness in the whites of one or both eyes. Beyond the visible redness, your eye or eyes may also feel itchy or irritated, sometimes accompanied by a gritty sensation, as if something is in your eye.

You might also experience excessive tearing, where your eyes become watery, potentially making it harder to see clearly. This tearing can switch between eyes if both are affected. Another symptom is light sensitivity, meaning you may find bright light uncomfortable, and you might even see spots in your vision. Lastly, your eye or eyes may release a discharge, particularly while you sleep, which can dry and form a crust around your eyes.

Conjunctivitis Treatment

Pink eye often heals within two to three weeks with adequate rest and consistent at-home care. If you wear contact lenses and develop pink eye, it’s crucial to stop wearing them immediately until all your symptoms have completely resolved. If your symptoms haven’t improved within two weeks, it’s advisable to see your doctor. To help relieve your symptoms during this time, you can try several solutions.

One effective solution is using artificial tears, which can moisten your eyes, soothe discomfort, and provide relief from itchiness and irritation. Applying cold or warm compresses can also be beneficial; cool compresses can reduce inflammation and dull pain, while warm compresses help reduce discharge.
