Seasonal Allergies
When the pollen count increases or the dust just won’t settle, we’re here to help!
Allergies happen when your immune system overreacts to a trigger, known as an allergen, that it mistakenly identifies as harmful. Many different things can be allergens, such as pollen, mold, pet dander, certain foods, or common skin irritants. While allergic reactions can occur at any time, seasonal allergies and their symptoms typically appear when plants like trees and grasses release pollen into the air.
Symptoms of an Allergies
When your body encounters allergens, it releases histamines, leading to a variety of symptoms. You might find yourself sneezing or coughing more than you are used to, as other symptoms of allergies may cause your airways to be inflamed, leading to a cough. Another common reaction is a rash, which develops when the body is overwhelmed by allergens and releases histamines, causing inflammation in your skin which results in a rash. Your eyes may also show signs of allergy, with other reactions your body may have being red, watery eyes or itchiness around your eyes.
Many people with allergies experience congestion in their nasal passage and a feeling of pressure in their sinuses, which you are very likely to experience when experiencing allergies. This congestion and pressure often lead to a headache, which is also a common symptom of allergies due to inflammation and swelling in sinus or nasal passages, coinciding with the congestion and pressure you may feel. Similar to red, watery eyes, allergies may also lead to your nose to drain and runny nose.
Allergy Treatments
While there is no cure for allergies, it is possible to relieve and reduce their symptoms. In some cases, certain therapies may be able to reduce the severity of allergic reactions in the future. To help ease your symptoms, oral medications such as over-the-counter antihistamines and decongestants may be used.
If you are experiencing an allergic reaction that includes a rash, a medical provider may recommend a topical medication to treat it. For severe allergy symptoms, when allergy symptoms are severe, a medical provider may refer you to an allergist, a specialist to determine specific triggers and causes of allergic reactions.
